reported to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon that all Kowloon Police, except Green Island, had been checked as safely over.

10.30 A Police party under Mr. Calthrop, Senior Superinten-

dent of Police, and Mr. Heath, Assistant Superintendent of Police with the Chief Inspector Kowloon was formed with the intention of proceeding over to Kowloon to acquire food from the Kowloon Godowns but the project was abandoned on instructions from the Defence Secre- tary.

10.30 After waiting without result for guards to arrive for the Star Ferries to prevent crews deserting Inspector Whant, Divisional Inspector Water Police, P.S.A. 216 Wheeler and Mr. MacKenzie of the Star Ferry Company decided to proceed over to Kowloon to reconnoitre. Five European civilians insisted on accompanying them over to Kowloon, two were women- Mrs. Hollands and Mrs. Sando in A.N.S. uniform, and in spite of Inspe ctor Whant's protest refused to leave the ferry. Approaching Kowloon about 50 Indians and a few British troops were observed firing with machine guns under Lieut Forsyte. These were taken on board and the launch left using the machine guns to cover the withdrawal. In spite of the two European ladies being made to lie flat on the deck Mrs. Hollands received a bullet wound in the abdomen. Mr. Pontig was superficially wounded in the head.

On arrival in Hong Kong orders were given by the Defence Secretary and the Harbour Master that no further trips were to be made over to Kowloon without special instruc tions.

12.00 As a result of a warning by the Military given at about 09.00 hours the same day that a Pill Box at Aberdeen had been blown up by hand grenades thrown from two sampans special watch was maintained and at 12.00 hours Police and Military opened fire with effect on the two sampans observed proceeding towards Kennedy Town. Batteries joined in and one sampan was destroyed 12.45 L. S.A.191 Donahue, I. P. C. 607 Santa Singh and I. P. C. B.

727 Waryan Singh were detailed from 76 Belchers Street Disperal Point, at the request of Mr. Buchanan of Messrs Marsman & Co., to clear No.9 Air Raid Tunnel at Smith- field of members of the public in order to make room for dynamite which was to be transported from Green Island. The party failed to return after carrying out this duty and it was subsequently ascertained that they had been blown up in the S.L. "Jeannette". (See report, entry No.30). Neither Inspector Nolloth, Divisional Inspector Western, or P. S. A. 88 Cordeaux, Officer in Charge Belchers Street Dispersal Point, had given any instructions to Sergeant Donahue to board the launch or take any part in the transport of the dynamite. It is not known definitely for what purpose the dynamite was required but it is surmised that it was to be used to create fire breaks.

a.m. Several calls were received during the morning for

assistance to control crowds at the rice shops in the Morrison Street area.
